Northern Home & Garden was created to share practical ideas for gardening, home, and seasonal living in a cold northern climate.
Here, gardening often means waiting patiently for the snow to melt, watching the forecast for that last spring frost, making the most of incredibly long summer days—and then wondering how September arrived so quickly. 😂
But a short growing season doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful garden.
Gardening in the North
Much of what you’ll find here comes from gardening in a Zone 2 climate, where winter temperatures can be extreme and the growing season can feel far too short.
We grow hardy perennials, vegetables, berries, annual flowers, and whatever else we’re curious enough to try.
You’ll find practical information about cold-hardy plants, raised beds, seed starting, raspberries, perennial gardening, frost preparation, winter garden care, and making the most of a short northern summer.
And we won’t show you only the successes.
Gardens are constantly changing. Plants get moved. Things become overcrowded. Trellises don’t always work the way we imagined. Some plants thrive, and others make it abundantly clear that they have no intention of surviving a northern winter. 😂
Those experiences are part of what we share here too.
A Beautiful Garden Doesn’t Require Acres of Land
Northern Home & Garden is also about making the most of the space you have.
You don’t need a huge country property to grow vegetables, berries, flowers, and perennials. Many of the gardens and projects featured here come from an ordinary in-town yard, where raised beds, trellises, thoughtful plant placement, and a little creativity help make every bit of space count.

Throughout Northern Home & Garden, we share photographs from our own home and garden.
You’ll see gardens when they’re overflowing in midsummer, but you’ll also see them during spring thaw, fall cleanup, first frost, and eventually buried beneath the snow.

Our content is reviewed and refined before publication, and AI-assisted imagery may be used when it helps illustrate a concept or season that we haven’t photographed ourselves.
